The Greenberg Building, originally called The Arcade Building, was designed and built by J. H. Fowble for Wade H. D. Warfield about 1907. Typically, an arcade building had a wide center corridor with stores on both sides. Until at least the late 1940s, the Arcade Building had a two-story, open walkway from Main Street to the back entrance. For many years, the third floor had a skylight to provide interior illumination. The skylight was covered before 1935. You can still see the open areas where the glass windows once were, between the children’s section and main area of our bookstore. ![]() Previous tenants of the Arcade Building included; Fireside Gift Shop which sold glassware, china, and photographs color-tinted by the Jones sisters; Sykesville’s first theater, The Lyceum; Masonic organizations; Sykesville’s first newspaper, The Sykesville Herald; A Post Office; a clothing and accessory store; a home furniture company; clothing merchants; and dentist offices. Sometime between 1946 and 1964 the center bay was closed in to create more office space and in the early 1970s the exterior was modernized. New electrical, heating, air conditioning and plumbing systems were installed. In the late 1990’s the building was restored to the original facade of the early 1900’s. The center bay of the second floor was rebuilt to harmonize with the bays on each side. Thus we now have our current building. If you would like more historical data on our building or other history of our town, you may purchase “Sykesville Past & Present: A Walking Tour” by Linda Greenberg. Our local Historical Museum can also give insight to our wonderful, historic town. |
