Why Promote Independent Bookstores?

Locally owned, independent businesses are the grassroots of America.  Unfortunately, these businesses are disappearing, replaced by chain stores and business conglomerates.  A Likely Story is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the character of our community through promotion of locally owned, independent businesses.  We use local independents as much as possible to meet our needs….and hope that you will, too.

Please Think and Buy Local First.  When considering any purchase of products or services, first check out a locally owned business. Don’t know of a local business that can meet your needs---ask someone! You’ll be surprised with what is available right here.  Are you really saving money by driving 10 miles away to save 10%?  Or by hiring a “big guy contractor,” who requires repeated calls for additional work to correct the problems, or sometimes even to finish the job?  When you buy local, you have a connection to the community as well as the person providing the services. Retail or Service---Think Local First!

Value for All of Us

Quality Products and Services: Local products and services are created and delivered with a personal touch. When you know where the product comes from, you can trust its quality.

Personable Service. Local businesses often know you by name, and are more likely to provide you with first-class, personalized service. If you have a problem, you know right where to go to get help.

Great for Our Community

1. Sense of Place. Do you want to live in a cookie-cutter community? Without the distinct character of local businesses, our neighborhoods would all look and feel the same.

2. Economic Contribution. Emerging research suggests that locally owned businesses contribute more to our local economy than do national or international corporations. Current statistics show that for every dollar spent at an independent, 56˘ is reinvested into your community.  On the other hand, at a non-independent (Chain) only 21˘ is reinvested into your community.

3. Local Businesses Spend Locally. By paying local taxes, spending profits locally, and using other local services and products, locally owned businesses help bolster the local economy. Local business owners are invested in the community---they live here, too.

4. Locally owned, independent businesses add so much uniqueness, class, and personality to our communities---but they can’t survive without support. Please check out your neighbor down the street before using a chain brand.

Thank you for Thinking Local.

What is BookSense?

Book Sense is a national campaign on behalf of the independent bookstores of America.  It is both a local and  national effort to shine a light on the knowledge and diversity of independent bookstores via the Book Sense Best Seller List - now running in more than a dozen newspapers as well as monthly in US News and World Report and on CSPAN - and Book Sense Picks - a monthly selection of eclectic new books chosen by independent booksellers.
